Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify the separate sounds that make up a word. It also includes the ability to make words with these separate sounds. Phonemic awareness is a skill that is associated with learning to read with phonics but it is a skill that can be developed independently and has other benefits as well.

Phonemic awareness is one of the most important abilities a child can have to help them improve their reading and spelling abilities. There are many studies that have confirmed that children with a high level of phonemic awareness have significantly better reading, reading comprehension, and spelling abilities compared to children who have a low level of phonemic awareness.
